批判的読解 (Critical Reading)
1. Critical reading の 4 ステップ
| ステップ | 質問 | 例 |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Comprehend (理解) | What is the author saying? | 主張・要点を把握 |
| 2. Analyze (分析) | How is the author saying it? | 構成・証拠・論法を分析 |
| 3. Evaluate (評価) | Is the argument convincing? Why or why not? | 論の強さ・弱さを判断 |
| 4. Reflect (反省) | What are my own assumptions? | 自分の偏見を自覚 |
各ステップで立てる質問
Comprehend: What is the main claim? What evidence is given?
Analyze: Who is the audience? What is the tone? What words are loaded?
Evaluate: Is the evidence reliable, recent, relevant? Are there logical leaps? What viewpoints are missing?
Reflect: Why do I agree / disagree? Is it because of evidence or my prior beliefs?
大事: 4 番目の Reflect が最も難しい。 自分が 「正しい」 と思った時こそ 「なぜそう思うか?」 を問う。 これが confirmation bias (確証バイアス) を防ぐ唯一の方法です。
2. author's intentとpurpose
| 概念 | 質問 | 例 |
|---|---|---|
| Intent (意図) | なぜ書いたか? | 読者の行動を変えたい、 知識を提供したい |
| Purpose (目的) | 何を達成したいか? | inform / persuade / entertain / call to action |
5 つの主な purpose
| Purpose | 特徴 | 例ジャンル |
|---|---|---|
| Inform (情報伝達) | 中立的・事実中心 | ニュース・教科書・百科事典 |
| Persuade (説得) | 立場明確・感情訴求 | 社説・広告・選挙演説 |
| Entertain (娯楽) | 物語・ユーモア | 小説・コラム |
| Instruct (指示) | 手順・規則 | 取扱説明書・レシピ |
| Express (表現) | 個人的感情・体験 | 日記・回想録・詩 |
Purpose を見分ける手がかり
- Tone (口調): neutral / urgent / sarcastic / nostalgic
- Word choice (語彙): technical / emotional / colloquial
- Structure (構造): factual + chronological / argumentative + claim-evidence
- Source (媒体): 新聞ニュース vs 社説 vs ブログ vs 広告
ポイント: 同じトピック (例: 移民政策) でも、 WSJ のニュース欄 と 社説欄 と Twitter では purpose と tone が全く違う。 「どの媒体で誰が何のために書いたか」 を常に意識。
3. bias (偏向) の種類
主な 6 種類
| 種類 | 説明 | 例 |
|---|---|---|
| Selection bias | 都合の良い事例だけ選ぶ | 「成功したベンチャー起業家 100 人を調査した結果...」 (失敗した 999 人を無視) |
| Confirmation bias | 自分の信念を裏付ける情報だけ集める | 「ワクチン反対派のブログばかり読んで結論する」 |
| Survivorship bias | 「生き残った」 例だけ見て一般化 | 「大学中退で成功した人がいるから大学は不要」 |
| Sampling bias | 偏った標本から結論 | 「Twitter ユーザーだけにアンケートして全国民の意見とする」 |
| Reporting bias | 報道機関の政治的立場で取り上げ方が違う | 同じ事件を保守系とリベラル系で全く違う角度で報道 |
| Cultural bias | 自文化を基準に他文化を評価 | 「アフリカは遅れている」 (西欧中心の視点) |
Bias を検出する質問
- 誰が引用されているか? (一方的なソースばかりではないか)
- どんな視点が欠落しているか? (反対意見・少数派)
- どんな形容詞が使われているか? (中立か感情的か)
- 数字は全体像を示しているか? (一部だけ切り取られていないか)
4. logical fallacy (詭弁) の 10 種類
| 名前 | 説明 | 例 |
|---|---|---|
| Ad hominem | 主張ではなく人を攻撃 | "You can't talk about climate because you fly on airplanes." |
| Strawman | 主張を歪めて攻撃 | (相手:「日曜営業を制限しよう」)→「君は全ての店を閉めたいんだね」 |
| Slippery slope | 一つ認めると全て破綻 | "If we allow gay marriage, soon people will marry their pets." |
| False dichotomy | 二者択一に単純化 | "You're either with us or against us." |
| Appeal to authority | 権威を根拠に (専門外の場合) | "Einstein was a vegetarian, so vegetarianism is best." |
| Appeal to emotion | 感情だけで結論 | "Think of the children! We must ban this!" |
| Hasty generalization | 少数例から全体化 | "I met two rude French people, so all French are rude." |
| Post hoc (full: post hoc ergo propter hoc、 ラテン語 「これの後だから、 これが原因」) | 時間的前後を因果と混同 | "After the new mayor took office, crime fell — therefore, the mayor reduced crime." (実は全国的傾向) |
| Circular reasoning (= begging the question / petitio principii) | 結論を前提にして結論を出す | "The Bible is true because it says so." |
| Bandwagon (= argumentum ad populum、 ラテン語 「民衆への訴え」) | 「皆がやっている」 が根拠 | "Everyone is buying this product, so you should too." |
例文と識別
Example 1: "We shouldn't listen to Greta Thunberg's climate advice — she's just a teenager."
訳: グレタ・トゥーンベリの気候助言を聞く必要はない、 彼女はまだ 10 代だ。
Fallacy: Ad hominem (主張の中身ではなく 「10 代」 という人物属性を攻撃)
Example 2: "Either we cut taxes by 50%, or the economy will collapse."
訳: 税を 50% 減らすか、 経済が崩壊するかのどちらかだ。
Fallacy: False dichotomy (実際には多くの中間案が存在)
大事: Fallacy は 「論理の形式」 が間違っているだけであり、 「結論が必ずず間違い」 とは限らない。 「結論は正しくても、 その論法で結論を導いてはいけない」 という警告です。
5. loaded language (重みみのある言葉)
中立的に見えるが、 強い感情や評価を含む言葉を loaded language と呼びます。 広告や政治演説で多用されます。
同じ事実 ・ 違う言葉
| 中立 | Pro (好意的) | Anti (敵対的) |
|---|---|---|
| Person crossing border without documents | undocumented immigrant | illegal alien |
| Tax-funded healthcare | universal coverage | socialized medicine |
| Climate change activist | climate defender | environmental extremist |
| Person on strike | striking worker | striking militant |
| Soldier killing in war | hero / liberator | terrorist / occupier |
検出方法
文章を読んで 形容詞・名詞を中立的なものに置換 してみる。 印象が大きく変わる単語 = loaded。
ポイント: ニュース見出しはほぼ必ず loaded。 同じ事件を異なる媒体 (BBC / Fox News / Al Jazeera 等) で比較すると言葉の違いが鮮明に見えます。
6. cherry-picking (都合の良い事実だけ提示)
数字や事例を 「都合の良いものだけ」 抜き取って主張を補強する手法。
例
"Renewable energy is failing. Last year, German solar generation dropped by 12%."
Vegetarians Live Longer: Study Proves Meat Is Killing Us"
本文: A new study from the University of California found that vegetarians live an average of 4 years longer than meat-eaters. Researchers surveyed 500 vegetarians and 500 meat-eaters in California. The vegetarians had lower rates of heart disease and obesity. "This proves that meat is the leading cause of premature death," said lead author Dr. Smith.
Critical
大事: 「Studies show ...」 と書いてあっても、 その研究が 査読付きか・標本数は何名か・観察研究か RCT (ランダム化比較試験) か を確認する習慣をつけましょう。
8. 練習課題
下の文を critical に読み、 (a) purpose、 (b) bias、 (c) fallacy を指摘してみましょう。
Sample text: "Smart parents choose XYZ Tutoring. Last year, 95% of our students improved their grades. Other tutoring services can't match these results. Don't let your child fall behind — enroll today before it's too late!"
解答例
- (a) Purpose: persuade (買わせるための広告)
- (b) Bias: selection bias (95% に含まれない 5% はどうなったか不明)、 reporting bias (元データ公開なし)
- (c) Fallacies:
- Bandwagon ("Smart parents choose ...")
- Appeal to fear ("Don't let your child fall behind ... before it's too late!")
- False dichotomy (XYZ を選ばないと子供が遅れる、 と暗示)
- Loaded language ("smart" parents =
