(Q&A — Handling Difficult Questions)
|---|---|---|
| Genuine question |
| Challenge |
|---|---|
| "Can you give us an example of that?" | Genuine |
| "Sorry, what did you mean by 'sustainability'?" | Clarification |
| "Your data is from 2020 — isn't that outdated?" | Challenge |
| "Why do you hate the economy?" | Hostile / loaded (false premise) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Acknowledge | 質問者を尊重 | "That's a great question." / "Thank you for raising that." |
| 2. Clarify (必要なら) | 質問を確認 | "If I understand correctly, you're asking ..." |
| 3. Answer | 本題に答える | "Let me address that in two parts ..." |
| 4. Confirm | 答えたか確認 | "Did that answer your question?" |
注意
- "That's a great question"
Technique 1: bridging (橋渡し)
Bridging
- "That's an interesting question, but the more pressing issue is ..."
- "I'd like to address that, but first let me put it in context ..."
- "What you're really asking, I think, is ..."
- "The bigger picture here is ..."
例
Q: "Your study only had 30 participants — isn't that too small to draw conclusions?"
A (bridging): "You raise an important point about sample size. While 30 may seem small, the more critical issue is that we used a paired design that detected a 38% effect with high statistical power. Let me explain why design matters more than raw numbers ..."
Technique 2: reframing (枠組再設定)
Q: "Why do you want to destroy the local economy with this regulation?"
A (reframing): "I think the question is whether this regulation is good or bad for the economy in the long term, not whether it 'destroys' anything. Let me share three economic models showing ..."
Reframing
- "I'd reframe that question slightly ..."
- "The real question, I believe, is ..."
- "Let me address the underlying concern ..."
Technique 3: acknowledgment (認識と同意)
Q: "Your proposal sounds expensive. We can't afford it."
A (acknowledgment): "You're absolutely right that cost is a major concern. I share that concern. Let me show you why I believe the long-term savings outweigh the upfront cost ..."
Acknowledgment
- "You raise a valid concern."
- "I share that worry, and that's exactly why ..."
- "That's a fair point. My response is ..."
- "I can see why you'd think that. Here's why I disagree ..."
4. Hostile
- 偽りの前提 ("Why is your generation so lazy?")
- 個人攻撃 ("You're too young to understand this.")
I hear your concern"
- 前提を静かに reframe — "But I'd describe the situation differently ..."
Q (hostile): "Your generation is destroying this country with your green nonsense. Do you even pay taxes?"
A: "I understand there's deep frustration about economic challenges, and that's a feeling many share. (acknowledgment) But environmental policy and economic policy aren't opposites — recent studies show that green industries created 12 million jobs in 2024 alone. (data) I'm happy to share the sources after the talk. (graceful exit)"
4 つの 「I don't know」 パターン
That's a great question, and honestly, I don't have the data on that. Let me look into it and follow up." |
That's outside my area of expertise, but I can recommend someone who might know." |
There's no consensus on that yet. The current evidence is mixed." |
We don't know for certain, but the current best hypothesis is ..." |
- 謝り続ける — "Sorry, sorry, I don't know" はプロらしくない
I don't have the exact figure, but I can tell you the trend is ..."
6. clarification
- "If I understand correctly, you're asking ...?"
- "Could you give me an example of what you mean?"
- "Are you asking about A or B?"
- "Just to be clear, are you challenging my methodology or my conclusion?"
- "I want to make sure I answer your real question — could you rephrase?"
例
Q: "I have a question about your study and I was wondering about the implications and also how this relates to the work of Dr. Smith and whether you considered the gender dimension and ..."
A: "There are several threads in your question — let me pick the central one. Are you most interested in the implications for policy, the comparison with Dr. Smith's work, or the gender analysis?"
- Hostile
- "Maybe we should move on to other questions — thank you for raising this."
- "Could we take this offline? I'd love to discuss this more after the session."
Tell me about yourself." |
Why this university?" "Why this major?" |
What's your favorite subject?" "Walk me through this project." |
Describe a challenge you've overcome." |
Tell me about a time you failed." |
What would you do if you saw a friend cheating?" |
What's your opinion on AI in education?" |
- S (Situation): 状況
- T (Task): 課題
- A (Action): 行動
- R (Result): 結果
例
Q: "Describe a time you led a team."
A (STAR): "Last year, my school's debate team was struggling. (S) As captain, I needed to prepare 12 members for the national tournament in 3 months. (T) I designed a peer-mentoring system where seniors coached juniors weekly, and I introduced video review sessions every Sunday. (A) As a result, our team won 8 of 12 rounds and reached the semifinals, our school's best result in 10 years. (R)"
- (Genuine) "Why did you choose this topic?"
- (Challenge) "Your data is 5 years old — isn't it outdated?"
- (Clarification) "What do you mean by 'sustainable development'?"
- (Hostile) "You're just a student — what makes you think you understand this issue?"
- 答えられない質問には "That's a great question, but I don't have data on that right now."
