(Rhetorical Devices)
Martin Luther King Jr. (1963)
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up ... I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia ... I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation ...
Education matters. Education breaks the cycle of poverty. Education opens doors that no other key can open. Education is freedom.
- John F. Kennedy (1961): "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
- 構造: [country can do] for you → [you can do] for country
他の例
- "We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." (George Bernard Shaw)
- "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." (going → tough → tough → going)
| Oxymoron |
|---|---|---|
- Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet: "Parting is such sweet sorrow."
- Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities (冒頭): "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
- Neil Armstrong (1969): "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."
Technology has connected us across continents, yet it has isolated us within our own homes.
|---|---|---|
| simile (直喩) | "like" / "as" を使う | He fought like a lion. |
| metaphor (隠喩) | 直接同一視 | He was a lion in battle. |
- Shakespeare As You Like It: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."
- Forrest Gump: "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." (simile)
大事: メタファーは 「死んだメタファー」 (foot of a mountain, head of a department) と 「生きたメタファー」 (新鮮な比喩) に分かれる。
- Lincoln Gettysburg Address (1863): "government of the people, by the people, for the people"
- Veni, vidi, vici (Caesar): "I came, I saw, I conquered." (3
|---|---|
| I like reading, to swim, and hiking. | I like reading, swimming, and hiking. |
| The new policy will reduce costs, increase efficiency, and we will see better results. | The new policy will reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve results. |
7. rhetorical question (修辞疑問)
- Shakespeare The Merchant of Venice: "If you prick us, do we not bleed?"
- Sojourner Truth (1851): "Ain't I a woman?"
Can we really afford to ignore climate change for another decade? What kind of world will our grandchildren inherit?
|---|---|---|
| hyperbole | 極端な誇張 | "I've told you a million times!" |
| understatement | 重大さを控え目に | "It's just a flesh wound."
| litotes | 否定で肯定を強調 | "Not bad" (= very good); "He is no fool." (= very clever) |
"millions of studies show ..." と書かず "many studies show ..."。
To be or not to be — that is the question."
- 歴史: "It was his Vietnam."
10. tricolon (3
- Caesar: "Veni, vidi, vici."
- Lincoln: "of the people, by the people, for the people"
- Obama (2008): "Yes, we can."
- Apple (Steve Jobs): "iPod. Phone. Internet communicator. ... iPhone." (3
(Veni → vidi → vici)
Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement (2005)
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
|---|---|
| anaphora | "Don't ..."
| parallelism | "be trapped by dogma" / "let the noise drown out" (動詞 + 名詞句並列) |
| metaphor | "the noise of others' opinions drown out your inner voice" (騒音と内なる声) |
| antithesis | "courage to follow your heart" vs "everything else is secondary" |
| tricolon | "Don't waste / Don't be trapped / Don't let" |
We need to act on climate change. The science is clear. The consequences are severe. There is no time to delay."
改良例
The science is clear. The consequences are severe. The time for action is now. We must act, not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. We must act, not for ourselves, but for our children. We must act, because the alternative is unthinkable.
