- 1（親・祖父母など年長の血縁者に）似ている外見や性格が、家系の年長者から受け継がれて似ていること。進行形にせず現在形で使うのが普通。

ニュアンス・使い分け
take after は「血縁の年長者に(生まれつき)似ている」という限定された意味で、似ている相手は親・祖父母など目上に限られる(× I take after my younger brother は不自然)。後天的に「真似て似る」のではなく遺伝的な相似を指す点が resemble との違い。resemble が物どうしの類似にも使えるのに対し、take after は人(特に家族)専用。受動態にはできない。性質か外見かは in を使って take after her in patience のように示す。
語源・由来
take(受け取る・引き継ぐ)+ after(〜に倣って)から。「後に続いて(年長者に)倣う」が原義。
