最上級さいじょうきゅう
「最 も 〜」。 the -est / the most 〜 の 形。 普通 「in / of 〜」 とセット。

最上級とは、3つ以上の中で「最も〜」という形です。文の形は A is the 最上級 in/of 〜. です。作り方は比較級と同じく語の長さで分かれます。

たとえば Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.、Tom is the tallest of the three. のように使います。in は場所・範囲、of は複数のものにつく点に注意します。
試験では in と of の使い分けが頻出。in my class（範囲）／ of the four（複数）。最上級には the をつけ忘れない。
最上級 は、 形容詞・副詞に -est、 長い語に the most を付けた形で、 3 つ以上の中で 「最も 〜」 を表します (比較 の 3 段階の 1 つ)。

ふつう形容詞の最上級には the を付けます。 範囲を示すとき、 場所や集団 (単数扱い) には in、 複数名詞には of を使う使い分けが重要です。 なお副詞の最上級や同一人物内の比較では the を省略できます。
試験では 範囲の in / of の使い分け、 原級・比較級 を使った最上級相当表現 (No (other) 〜 is as tall as / taller than) への書き換えが頻出です。
