descendant は動詞 descend（下る・血をひく）から来た名詞で、「祖先から下ってきた者＝子孫」を表し、反対語は ancestor（祖先）。前置詞は of を伴い a descendant of ... の形が定番。比喩で言語・技術が「先のものから派生した後継」を指す用法もある。つづり違いの descendent（形容詞「下降する」）と混同しやすいが、名詞「子孫」は -ant が標準。一人の子を指す offspring とは違い、descendant は世代を超えた子孫全体に使える。
