be predicated on は「…を成り立ちの前提・土台とする」という非常に硬い表現で、論文・評論・法律文書に典型的に現れる。日常会話ではまず be based on を使う。受身形で用いるのが基本で、能動の predicate ＝「断言する／(論理学で)述語づける」とは語感がかなり離れる。前置詞は on が一般的だが upon も同義で使える。直後に the assumption / idea / belief that … を続け、「…という前提に立つ」という形が頻出。
語源・由来
predicate は prae（前に）+ dicare（公に言う）から「あらかじめ言明する」が原義。論理学の「述語(predicate)」とも通じ、「前提として立てる」の意に発展した。
