world は通例 the を付けて the world とし、「（人類の暮らす）世界」を指す。物理的な天体としての「地球」は earth、丸い球としては globe を使い分ける（around the world は「世界中を」だが around the globe もほぼ同義）。the world of music のように「〜の世界・分野」も表す。in the world は疑問詞を強めて「いったい」（What in the world ...?）にもなる。形容詞 worldwide（世界規模の）も頻出。
