representative は形容詞「(全体を)よく表す・典型的な」と名詞「代表者・代理人」をつなぐ語。統計では a representative sample(母集団の特徴を偏りなく映す標本)が結果の信頼性のかなめで、偏ると unrepresentative(代表性を欠く)になる。形容詞 typical が「ありがちな・よくある」を広く指すのに対し、representative は「全体を正しく代表する」点に重きがある。名詞では会社の rep(略称)や、アメリカの House of Representatives(下院)でも使う。動詞 represent と同語族。
