意味
- 1論点先取りをする、証明すべき結論を前提にしてしまう本来の論理学上の意味。結論として示すべきことを、すでに正しいものとして議論の前提に置く誤りを指す。
- 2当然次の疑問を生じさせる現代の口語で広く使われる用法。ある事柄が必然的に新たな問いを呼び起こすこと。

beg the question は本来「論点先取り（petitio principii）」という論理の誤りを指す学術表現。近年は「当然〜という疑問が湧く」の意味でも一般化したが、フォーマルな論証では「証明すべき結論を前提に置く循環論法」の意味で用いられ、その厳密さが1級らしい。
語源・由来
アリストテレスの論理学用語をラテン語訳した petitio principii「原理を要求する」の英訳。証明の出発点として要求してはならないものを要求する、という論証の誤りを指した。
